by admin (08/2001)

Starting point:  Elmau
Stations (sorry, only in German): Elmau (1008m)  -  Abzw. Ferchenbach  -  Bock Hütte (1052m)  -  Blaue Gumpe (1210m)  -  Angerhütte (1370m)

Synopsis: Surely one of the most sensitive areas. Absolute regard for pedestrians is a must, especially on the path from the Bockhütte to the Angerhütte.

Variants: You can leave out the last part of the gravel path and stay at the picturesque Blaue Gumpe and cool down in the refreshing clear blue mountain lake. Another possibility is to start in Mittenwald and pass the Ferchensee on the way to Elmau, or to come from Garmisch, passing the Partnachalm

By bike you hardly come closer to Germany's highest spot, the Zugspitze nearby Garmisch . We recommend making this tour during the week, when there are less pedestrians. You can also reach the parking place at Elmau , where this tóur starts, from Mittenwald, passing Ferchensee. This adds 200 meters in height and 11 km more to your tachometer.
After having started in Elmau, we ride downhill gently for 4.5 km, until we cross the Ferchenbach in a sharp bend to the left. We pass the beginning of the Partnachklamm (sorry, closed for bikers). There are likely to be some more pedestrians on the path along the Partnach river. About 2 km before we reach the Bockhütte the bikers coming from Garmisch join us. From the area round the Bockhütte we can catch the first glimpse of the Oberreintal , which seems rather impossible to be reached on your bike.

After the Bockhütte the path gets rougher and stonier. Until the Blaue Gumpe you can still ride quite easily.  But afterwards it gets quite exhausting. Rough, stony, and narrow paths with iron plates - all this hardly leaves you any time to enjoy the beautiful landscape and the view to the Gsundbrunn waterfalls.

The Angerhütte welcomes us with waving prayer-flags and inviting tables in what is maybe Germany's highest beer-garden. After the well deserved Radlermass (a mix of beer and lemonade) and a cold foot-bath , we start our way down. Absolute concentration is requested now by stones, tree-roots and iron plates till we can roll down comfortably home on broad forest roads after the Bockhütte.
